Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest specific calls from the official, echoing the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
